Word & Character Counter

We count extended grapheme clusters — what a human reads as one character. A 👍 is one character, a family emoji 👨‍👩‍👧 is one, and an accented é is one, even though they take several UTF-16 code units internally. We also show the raw code-unit number for transparency.

X weights each CJK (Chinese/Japanese/Korean) character as 2 toward its 280 limit. We count graphemes, which is correct for the vast majority of text; when your text contains CJK characters we show a note explaining X may report a higher number.

A sentence is a run of text ending in . ! ? or … (consecutive terminators like ?! count as one). A paragraph is a block of text separated by a blank line. Abbreviations like 'Dr.' can inflate the sentence count slightly — there's no perfect rule without grammar analysis.

No. Counting runs entirely in your browser as you type — open the Network tab and you'll see no request carries your text. It never leaves your device.
